Dear Friends in Christ:

Bishop Robert W McElroy

It is with great honor that I share with you some thoughts about having a Catholic burial. First, it is important to know that a Catholic Cemetery is sacred, holy ground. Holy Cross is currently the only Catholic Diocesan Cemetery in San Diego, and continues the Catholic Tradition of the Spanish missionaries by celebrating the lives of the deceased with prayer and the Sacrament of the Eucharist at weekly Mass.

As Baptized Catholics, we begin our journey in the Church and take our first steps as a new creation in Christ. At the end of our earthly life we have the privilege of burial in consecrated ground at a Catholic Cemetery. Whether you choose to be cremated, buried in the ground or laid to rest in the mausoleum, it is every Catholic’s sacred right and calling to choose burial in a Catholic Cemetery. The Catholic Church believes that those who were together in life should not be separated in death. Holy Cross welcomes non-Catholic family members as well, and offers may options for in-ground burials, marble cremation niches and crypts, mausolea and columbaria of glass-fronted niches to display personal urns.

Located on consecrated land, Holy Cross offers a place for quiet reflection, devotion, meditation and prayer. The Holy Mass is celebrated every Friday in a beautiful Mausoleum Chapel for the repose of the souls laid to rest at Holy Cross. Catholic Funeral Rites and Tradition coupled with beautiful vistas, careful maintenance, statuary and garden buildings, dedicated sections for veterans and the unborn, and the most flexible financing, differentiate Holy Cross from any other San Diego cemetery. As a Church, we believe in the Communion of Saints and call on the prayers of the faithful to help us in our journey to heaven.

Lastly, Holy Cross provides the longevity that is expected to endure long after private or commercially-run cemeteries. When you choose a Catholic Cemetery, you are laid to rest with people who share the same faith, traditions and heritage. Giving your loved one a proper burial is a Corporal Work of Mercy and act of love.

I encourage all of you to avail yourselves of this wonderful ministry provided by our diocese for the benefit of our people.  The staff at Holy Cross strives to provide personal and sympathetic service.SD_DioceseShield
